“Life Animated” is a documentary film about the journey of Owen Suskind -an autistic boy – a story previously told by his father, Pulitzer writer Ron Suskind, in the eponymous book.
Owen is just three years old when he suddenly stops communicating.
Owen starts watching avidly Disney movies, through which he manages to slowly build emotional connections with his parents and the surrounding world.
Throughout the documentary, Mac Guff has created short visual clips telling Owen’s story and a five-minutes fully animated sequence illustrating his own vision of the world.
Owen is fond of traditional animated movies, not computer generated images, so Mac Guff naturally decided to produce 2D hand-animation, in close collaboration with Director Roger Ross Williams.
A team of 7 artists worked over 5 months to achieve very sensitive visuals around the character of Owen, his story and imaginary world.
The film is nominated for Best Documentary Award at the Oscars 2017.
The film has received the Special Achievement Award at the Annie Awards on February 3rd 2017.
With “Life, Animated” the Director, Roger Ross Williams, is a nominee at the DGA Awards, and he has previously won the Directing Award: US Documentary at the Sundance Festival 2016.
